Stinging Insects

Table of Contents

Bees, wasps, and hornets fit into the stinging insect category. All stinging insects are members of the Hymenoptera order. Although they can help pollinate plants, they’ll create problems for homeowners. With that being said, it is generally best to keep them out. If they invade your home, there is a risk that someone in your house is going to get stung. You don’t want this to happen because some stinging insects can be dangerous. Before approaching a stinging insect nest, you need to find out what you’re dealing with.

How aggressive will they be? How can you get rid of them? Identifying the species is the best way to find out what you’re dealing with. Below, you’re going to learn more about the stinging insects in Kansas City.

Which Stinging Insect?

You’ll need to learn more about the stinging insect you’re dealing with. There are several. With that being said, you should evaluate the insect depending on its appearance and the appearance of the nest.

Paper Wasps

Paper wasps can be found in Kansas City. They’re not as aggressive as some of the other members but they can still cause problems. Don’t try reaching for their nest because you will get stung. They build small, gray nests that are round. Furthermore, their nests feature a honeycomb shape. In general, paper wasps build their nests near eaves and fences.

There are several species of paper wasps. It is pertinent to identify the species first. European paper wasps are black with orange antennas and yellow stripes. As for Northern Paper Wasps, they have brown bodies.

Yellow jackets

When it comes to aggression, it is hard to top yellow jackets. They rank near the top of the list. During late summer and fall, their colony gets larger and they become more aggressive. Yellow jackets build large nests and live alongside thousands of other stinging insects. Their nests tend to be covered with a paper-like material that is either black or gray. Yellow jackets often build nests near porches and attics. However, some species build underground nests.

Yellow jackets have yellow and black stripes. They tuck their legs close to their body when flying.

Bald-Faced Hornets

You’ll want to stay away from bald-faced hornets because they’re very aggressive. Again, they become more aggressive when the nest gets bigger. Try to avoid them in late summer and fall. They build large nests that can house thousands of insects. Their nests look similar to upside-down teardrops. They can be built on bushes and building sides.

Bald-faced hornets have black and white bodies.

Honeybees

Honeybees aren’t too aggressive but they may sting. However, some have been bred to prevent them from stinging. These stinging insects are often bred so the owner can collect their honey. Honeybees build nests with extensive combs. Their nests are found in wall cavities and on rock faces. Honeybees often use the same nest for multiple years. To do that, they have to store honey.

These stinging insects have fuzzy bodies that are orange or yellow.

Carpenter Bees

Carpenter bees are not aggressive. You can approach their nest without getting stung. These stinging insects bore holes into wood surfaces, including siding and fascia. They discard the wood and use the hole to care for their young. These pests look like bumblebees.

There are several carpenter bee species. The one in Kansas City is black and yellow with a fuzzy thorax. Males have a small yellow spot on their faces.

Dangers Of Stinging Insects

Stinging insects can be dangerous, but not all of them are. Male stinging insects do not sting. However, females do. Another thing to note is that some stinging insects can sting their victims multiple times. Therefore, you cannot ignore the risks involved. It is not a good idea to approach a stinging insect nest. Make sure you know what you’re dealing with before doing so. Another problem is that some pests build underground nests. When they do this, they’re more difficult to identify and eliminate.

Reasons

These pests are going to approach your home because they need to build nests. Your property will likely have many great nesting spots for them.

Getting Rid Of Stinging Insects

You may decide to use DIY methods to eliminate the stinging insects on your property. Although this works, it is generally not a good idea. The problem is that you’ll be more likely to get stung. It is pertinent to take steps to protect yourself. The best way to do that is by working with a qualified exterminator. They’ll help you eliminate the pests without getting yourself into trouble.

What Is The Most Effective Stinging Insect Prevention Strategy?

Stinging insects can be dangerous, especially when you are not aware of their presence. We do not recommend DIY intervention for stinging insect extermination. However, we do recommend DIY stinging insect prevention. We suggest starting by removing all decaying wood structures from your property. Hire an arborist or tree service to cut down and remove all decaying trees and tree stumps. Rake up all rotting lawn debris and transport it to a local recycling center. Continue cleaning up until there is nothing left behind to draw stinging insects to your property.
